A group of carbon compound having same general formula and same functional group is called homologous series. The members of homologous series are called homologue.

For example: Alkane:
CH4 –methane,
C2H6 – ethane,
C3H8–propane.

Characteristics of homologous series-

  • They have same general formula for all compounds. They have same functional group.
  • They have same chemical but different physical properties.
  • They have difference of –CH2 between two successive members and difference between their mass is 14 amu.
