“Hybridization is defined as the process of intermixing of the orbitals of slightly different energies so as to redistribute their energies, resulting in the formation of a new set of orbitals of equivalent energies and shape.”
Hybridization of Ethyne :
In Ethyne molecule, the carbon atom needs one more electron to form four bonds with hydrogen and other carbon atoms. Hence, the 2s orbital in each carbon hybridizes with one of the 2p orbitals and forms two hybrid orbitals.
Ethyne molecule has three-sigma bonds while two pi bonds.
Thus, a triple bond between two carbon atoms is formed in this molecule.
Hence, hybridization of Ethyne molecule is hybridization and it has a linear geometry.
