Normal blood pressure for adults ranges between 100-140 mm systolic and 60- 80 diastolic. A rise above 140/90 is known as hypertension or high blood pressure in popular language.

It is caused by the constriction of very small arteries which results in increased resistance to blood flow.

Very high blood pressure can lead to rupture of artery and cause internal bleeding.
