What is hypogeal germination?

The part of the embryo which is present above the point of attachment of cotyledons in a seed is called as epicotyl. When the seed germinates, if epicotyl elongates, then the cotyledons remain below the ground and the plumule grows into a shoot. Such type of germination is called as hypogeal germination.
Examples: gram, pea, maize, etc.
