Hysterectomy:
- Hysterectomy is a medical process in which the uterus is removed through surgery.
- The cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other surrounding structures may also be removed in this process.
- A surgeon can remove the entire uterus of a female or only a small portion of it depending on the reason behind the hysterectomy.
- Hysterectomy comes in a variety of forms such as- total hysterectomy, hysterectomy with oophorectomy, supracervical hysterectomy, radical hysterectomy.
Types of hysterectomy:
There are various types of hysterectomy which are explained as follows-
Total hysterectomy:
- This is the most common type of hysterectomy in which only the cervix and uterus are removed instead of the whole ovary.
Hysterectomy with oophorectomy:
- In hysterectomy with oophorectomy, one or both ovaries, uterus, and sometime fallopian tubes are also removed.
Supracervical hysterectomy:
- The surgeon removes the uterus body but leaves the cervix intact during this procedure.
- Noncancerous conditions such as fibroids or endometriosis can be treated with this surgery.
Radical hysterectomy:
- In this process, the uterus, top portion of the vagina, most of the tissue surrounding the cervix, and sometimes the pelvic lymph nodes are removed by the surgeon.
