Young animals learn from their immediate surroundings. They develop an emotional attachment to the first object/ animal they see. This behavioural type is called imprinting.
Konrad Lorenz studied imprinting in geese. He reared them and after hatching they imprinted and followed him around and preferred to be near him even after growing into adults.
