What is Inert Pair effect? Discuss the oxidation states of Group 13 elements in light of inert pair effect.

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student

The inert pair effect is the tendency of the electrons in the outermost s-orbital to remain unshared in compounds of post-transition metals.
The +3 oxidation state is the common oxidation state for 13 group, but elements loke boron, aluminium etc. show +1 oxidation state due to inert pair effect.
