Question

What is an insulator according to the bandgap?

Open in App
Solution

  1. A semiconductor is a material having a non-zero band gap that acts as an insulator at zero absolute temperature but allows electrons to thermally excite in their conducting bands below its melting point.
  2. On the other hand, an insulator is a substance with a wide variety of characteristics.
  3. There is a large energy difference between the conductive band and the valence band in an insulator.
  4. Electrons are unable to migrate to the conductive band and generate an electric current due to the enormous energy gap.
  5. The polar opposite of conductors are insulators; powerful insulators have high resistance and block the passage of electricity.
  6. The energy gap in the insulator is very high up to 7eV.
  7. Glass and wood are examples of insulators.
