Question

What is ionisation energy and separation energy? How to find them?

Open in App
Solution

Ionization energy

  • The ionization energy is a measure of the capability of an element to enter into chemical reactions requiring ion formation or donation of electrons
  • It is the minimum energy that an electron in a gaseous atom or ion has to absorb to come out of the influence of the nucleus
  • Ionization energy is the energy change during the transition from infinity to the ground state I.E=EEGroundstate.
  • The Ionization energy can be caluclated by the equationI.E=Rz2(1n2)where,R=Rydbergconstant,z=chargeofion,n=orbitnumber

Separation energy

  • Separation energy is the energy needed to remove one nucleon (or other specified particle or particles) from an atomic nucleus.
  • The separation energy is different for each nuclide and particle to be removed.
  • separation energy is the energy change during the transition from infinity to the excited state of the electron.S.E=EEexcitedstate
