Some elements sometimes have the same atomic number but different mass number in their atoms. These are called isotopes.The element carbon has 3 isotopes. mass no. of one is 12, mass no of another is 13 and the mass no of another is 14. The isotope of carbon having the mass no 12 can also be called carbon 12.
