Question

What is it called when the cell membrane has a low turgor pressure?

Open in App
Solution

Turgor Pressure:

  1. Water pushes the cellular membranes against the cell wall of the cell, causing turgor pressure.
  2. Whenever turgor pressure is high, the cell's membrane put pressure on the cell wall, resulting in turgidity.
  3. The cell becomes flaccid when the turgor pressure is low. This manifests itself in plants as wilting anatomical structures.
  4. Plasmolysis is the technical term for this condition.
  5. The osmosis into a hypotonic plant cell increases the turgor pressure against the cell wall till pressure prohibits the entry of water into the cell.
  6. The cell is turgid at this phase.
  7. Cells no longer push against the cell wall as water pours out of them.
  8. Therefore, when the cell membrane has a low turgor pressure it becomes flaccid.
