Solution

Stratified squamous epithelium

  1. The cells of the stratified squamous epithelium are arranged in many layers.
  2. Cells of different layers are different from each other.
  3. The cells in the deeper tissue possess cuboidal cells, which become polygonal and finally become flattened towards the free surface.

Keratin

  1. These flattened cells on the outermost exposed surface contain a fibrous protein called keratin which makes them dead.
  2. These cells can flake off.
  3. This plays a role in protecting from wear and tear of the tissues.
