Stratified squamous epithelium
- The cells of the stratified squamous epithelium are arranged in many layers.
- Cells of different layers are different from each other.
- The cells in the deeper tissue possess cuboidal cells, which become polygonal and finally become flattened towards the free surface.
Keratin
- These flattened cells on the outermost exposed surface contain a fibrous protein called keratin which makes them dead.
- These cells can flake off.
- This plays a role in protecting from wear and tear of the tissues.
