Question

What is lanthanide contraction? Mention the cause for it.

Open in App
Solution

The gradual decrease in the atomic and ionic radii of lanthanide elements is known as lanthanide contraction. This is due to poor shielding of 4f electrons. The extent of shielding is lower for 4f electrons than for d electrons. With increase in the nuclear charge, the valence shell is pulled slightly towards nucleus.
