Sulfate may have a laxative effect that can lead to dehydration and is of special concern for infants with time, people and young livestock will become acclimated to the sulfate.
Excessive sulfate (>500 ppm) in drinking water causes the laxative effect, otherwise, at moderate levels it is harmless.
It osmotically prevents water absorption in the large bowel and thus leads to an acceleration of the intestinal transit and better stool consistency.
