Lichens are formed by the symbiotic association between algae and fungi. The alga is a cyanobacterium and it has a mutualistic relationship with the fungal partner. The cyanobacteria can synthesise food by photosynthesis and the fungus absorbs mineral nutrients by means of the hyphae.
