Question

What is made prior to acetyl CoA?

Open in App
Solution

Oxidative decarboxylation or link reaction:

  1. Citric acid cycle is a essential part of cellular respiration.
  2. In this cycle, acetyl CoA oxidizes to release ATP.
  3. Acetyl CoA is produced by oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate.
  4. In this process, the carboxylic acid group from the pyruvate is removed in the form of carbon dioxide.
  5. In this process, NAD+ accepts the electrons to form NADH.
  6. Then, an acetyl group is attached to coenzyme A to form Acetyl CoA which then enters the Kreb's cycle.
  7. This is very short step between glycolysis and citric acid cycle.
  8. The pyruvate molecules are formed in glycolysis and losses a carbon to produce acetyl CoA.
  9. Therefore, prior to the for5mation of acetyl CoA, pyruvate was produced by the process of glycolysis.
