Question

What is magnetic induction ? Describe in detail how a steel needle can be magnetised by induction.

Solution

Magnetic induction:- Magnetic induction is the production of an electromotive force across an electrical conductor in a changing magnetic field.

Magnetic induction is one of the ways of making magnetic material like steel and iron into magnets. In other words, magnetic induction is a process of inducing magnetism in an ordinary piece of magnetic material.

Following steps are-

1). Simply place the steel needle close to a strong magnet without touching.

2). The steel needle bar becomes an induced magnet with the end nearer the magnet having opposite polarity to that of the magnet.

3). Hence, the iron needle is attracted and attached to the permanent magnet. The magnetic induction process reveal how magnetic materials can be attracted to magnets.

4) Induced magnetism is a temporary process. If the permanent magnet is removed, the magnetic material will usually lose its induced magnetism.
