- Magnetism is a phenomenon by which a magnet attracts or repels other magnetic substances.
- The characteristic of the combined electromagnetic force is magnetism.
The basic properties of a magnet are as follows:
- When a magnet is dipped in iron filings, we can notice that the iron filings stick to the end of the magnet because, at the ends of the magnet, the attraction is maximum. These ends are known as magnet poles.
- Magnetic poles are always in pairs.
- Any time a magnet is openly suspended in mid-air it always points north-south. The pole pointing to the geographic north is regarded as the North pole and the South pole is regarded as the pole pointing to the geographic south.
- Like poles which repel, unlike poles that attract.
- When the distance between these magnets is lower the magnetic force between the two magnets is greater.
