The energy is applied to break the chemical bond of the compounds/molecules as external heat is supplied in the process it is termed as endothermic process.

Similarly making of bond involves expulsion (or) fusion of energy which emits heat to the surrounding is termed as exothermic process.

Bond-breaking = endothermic process

Bond-making = exothermic process
