What is mean by bifunctional and trifunctional polymers?

Open in App
Solution

Polymers:

  • "The term polymer is defined as very large molecules having high molecular mass (103-107u). These are also referred to as macromolecules, which are formed by joining of repeating structural units on a large scale."
  • The polymers are classified on the basis of the functional group numbers attached.

Bifunctional polymer:

  • The polymer that is formed by joining bifunctional monomeric units is known as Bifunctional polymer.
  • Dacron is a polymer of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid.

Trifunctional polymer:

  • Trifunctional polymer means one having three functional groups in every monomer.
  • Examples of trifunctional or polyfunctional monomeric units are glycerine and divinylbenzene.
