What is meant by corrosion of metals?

Corrosion is the natural process in which the transformation occurs from pure metal to an undesirable substance. This happens because the metals when exposed to air or water will get corroded. The metal will lose shine and colored layer in the presence of air or water, such process is so-called corrosion.

The conditions in which corrosion occurs are as follows:

• In the presence of air.
• In the presence of moisture and water.
• For example, Silver gets tarnished when exposed for a longer period of time and therefore, it loses its shine.
• Similarly in the case of Iron, when exposed the thin brown coated layer will change to green colored layer.
