The dispersion of light is the phenomenon of splitting of a beam of white light into its seven constituent colours when passed through a transparent medium such as a prism. The refractive index of materials varies with the wavelength (and frequency) of light. This is why different components of white light bend by different amounts, resulting in the splitting of light.
