What is meant by environment? Why is the environment considered to be a system?
Answer:
All around us is an environment that comprises the living and non-living objects like soil, water, animals and plants that adapt to their environment. It is the gift of nature that serves to nourish the lives of the world.
In the existence of life on this planet, the environment plays a key role. The word Environment is taken from the French term Environ which means surrounding. Both living and non-living objects present in the world are referred to as an ecosystem, and it is the base of the biosphere that defines the health of the entire earth.
Various forms of human activities are specifically related to environmental hazards, including acid rain, ocean acidification, global warming, deforestation, ozone layer depletion, toxic waste disposal, climate change, overpopulation, pollution, and so on.
