Epithelial tissue is a type of animal tissue made up of densely packed cells that rest on a basement membrane to act as a covering or lining of various bodily surfaces and cavities.

Epithelial tissue has differently shaped cells. There are columnar cells, which means 'column-like cells'; cuboidal cells, which are cube-like cells; and squamous cells, which are flattened and scale-like cells.
