Fertilization is generally, which takes place when a female's ovum (or "egg") joins together with the male's sperm and they form a zygote. Fertilization is also called conception. The fertilized egg is known as zygote. It is the zygote only which grows into an embryo.

The stages of fertilization can be divided into four processes:
1) sperm preparation.
2) sperm-egg recognition and binding.
3) sperm-egg fusion.
4) fusion of sperm and egg pronuclei and formation of the zygote.
