What is meant by saying that the latent heat of vaporisation of water is 22.5×105J/Kg?
It means that 22.5×105J of heat is required to change 1 Kg of water (at its boiling point, 100∘C into steam at the same temperature of 100∘C.
Why is the latent heat of fusion of ice i.e 3.34×105 J/kg less than the latent heat of vapourisation i.e 22.5×105 J/kg? Particles of solids are more tightly packed than liquids so literally the should require more energy for separation than liquids.
