Question

What is meant by stability of coordination compound in solution State the factors which govern stability of complexes

Open in App
Solution

Stability of coordination compound in solution means the degree of association between the species involved in the state of equilibrium. Stronger is the metal-ligand bond, less is the dissociation in solution, more is the stability. Stability can be expressed quantitatively in terms of stability constant.

M+3LML3

Stability constant = ML3[M][L3]
The factors which govern the stability of complexes are:

  1. Charge and size of the metal ion.
  2. Nature of ligands
  3. Chelation
  4. Hardness and softness
  5. Surrounding conditions
  6. Macrocyclic effect

  7. Basic strength

  8. Size and charge of ligands.
