What is meant by statistics?

Statistics is a name given to a branch of mathematics which is concerned with collection and interpretation of quantitative data.

For example, if you want to find out what is the average of children in a family among all the families living in a colony, you collect the details of each family + how many children they have and then use this information (or data) to compute the average number of children per family. This is what you study under Statistics chapter of mathematics.
