What is meant by the anomalous expansion of water?

→ When the matter is heated, it expands, and when it is cooled it contracts.

→ However, water behaves in a unique way.

→ When water is cooled from a high temperature it contracts till the temperature is 4°C.

→ On further cooling 4°C, water starts expanding till 0°C.

→ This is known as anomalous expansion of water.

→ During this expansion, the volume increases and therefore the density decreases.
