The electronic configuration plays a vital role in deciding the properties of an element.
The electronic configuration changes from going left to right in a period and from top to bottom in a group as the number of valence electrons, and number of shells changes, respectively.
This can be used to determine certain properties of elements like atomic size, valency, tendency to lose/gain electrons, etc.
Certain properties are same for elements belonging to same group, like number of valence electrons, and formula of oxides.
