What is meant by the renewal of a bill of exchange?

When the acceptor of the bill approaches the drawer with the request for an extension of time for payment, the old bill is cancelled and the fresh bill with new terms of payment is drawn and duly accepted and delivered. This is called the renewal of the bill.
