By challenges we mean the obstructions on the path of the successful implementation or exercise of democracy. Most democracies face the following challenges. These are as follows:

1) Foundation Challenge- Keeping powers in the hands of the civilians instead of the military or any such other authorities. It also involves granting rights to its citizens.
2) Challenge of Expansion - applying democratic principles across diversities.
3) Deepening of democracy- strengthening the practices and ideals of democracy.
