Unstable equilibrium is that position of the electric dipole for which 1) the dipole when slightly displaced from that position further rotates in the direction of rotation if released from that position.2) the potential energy of the dipole is maximum .Potential energy U=-pE cosθif θ=180°U=-pE cos180°U=-pE×(-1)=pEwhich is the maximum value the potential energy of the dipole can assume .Regards
