Question

What is mechanical wave?

Open in App
Solution

A mechanical wave (periodic or non-periodic) can be viewed as a disturbance in a medium through which it travels. The particles of the medium oscillate about their mean position and the average displacement of the particles is not affected. It also important to remember than no matter is transferred, only information. It is called a mechanical wave because of the physical interactions of the particles of the medium with each other or its propagation is mechanical in nature

Some examples are:

Ocean wave
Sound wave
Seismic wave

Mechanical wave is a wave that is an oscillationion of matter, and therefore transfers energy through a medium.

mechanical wave requires an initial energy input. Once this initial energy is added, the wave travels through the medium until all its energy is transferred. In contrast, electromagnetic wave require no medium, but can still travel through one.
