During the release of the ovum, the uterus prepares for a possible fertilisation. It develops a thick wall so as to receive the embryo. (0.5 Marks)

However, when there is no fertilisation, the uterine wall begins to disintegrate. (0.5 Marks)

This process of discharge of blood, mucus and unfertilised egg through the vagina is known as menstruation. (1 Mark)
