Matter can be classified into two categories :pure substances and mixtures.

As the name suggests, mixtures are a combination of atoms or molecules that are not chemically bonded. They can be separated into their original components. Mixtures can be classified again into homogeneous (same components) and heterogeneous mixtures(different components).

A pure substance is a combination of atoms or molecules with a chemical bonding. They have a fixed composition and they cannot be separated easily.
