Question

What is Mohr titration?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Mohr titration is defined as the type of titration which helps in determining the Chloride ion Cl- concentration when it is titrated against Silver nitrateAgNO3.
  2. When we add Silver nitrateAgNO3 to chloride solution it forms Silver ChlorideAgCl precipitates.
    Ag+aq+Cl-aqAgCls
  3. When all the Chloride ions are precipitated, the end point is reached.
  4. Silver ions Ag+that are left in the solution will react with the Chromate ion CrO42-of the indicator Potassium chromateK2CrO4 to form a red-brown precipitate of Silver chromate Ag2CrO4.
    2Ag+aq+CrO42-aqAg2CrO4s
  5. So by this method Chloride ion concentration can be determined in any source like seawater, sewage, etc.
