What is monogenic inheritance?

Open in App
Solution

Inheritance:

Inheritance is the process of genetic information being passed down from parent to offspring.

Monogenic inheritance:

  1. Monogenic inheritance is a type of inheritance where it is controlled by alleles for a single locus.
  2. According to Mendelian genetics, each gene has two alleles that determine the character, and these alleles segregate independently during gamete formation to produce a distinct character.
  3. In monogenic inheritance, a single gene determines a single trait.
  4. This inheritance pattern is also known as a qualitative inheritance which shows discontinuous differences in characteristics.

Examples of traits showing monogenic inheritance:

Sickle cell anemia, Huntington's disease, and cystic fibrosis are monogenic traits.
