The wood of Gymnosperms is classified into manoxylic or pycnoxylic.

Manoxylic wood:

  1. It is a non-compact wood with a large amount of parenchyma, big pith, and cortex mixed with a small number of xylem tracheids or wood.
  2. Manoxylic wood is not a long-lasting material.
  3. Example- Cycas

Pycnoxylic wood:

  1. It is a compact strong wood with a large number of xylem tracheids or wood and a small amount of cortex and pith with little Parenchyma.
  2. Pycnoxylic wood is durable and yields timber
  3. Example- Pinus
