What Is N/10 HCl Solution?

Open in App
Solution

Normality:

  • The number of gram equivalent mass of solute dissolved in one liter of the solution is called the normality of the solution.
  • Gram equivalent mass is defined as the mass of an element (compound or ion) that combines or displaces 1.008 g hydrogen or 8 g oxygen or 35.5 g chlorine.
  • So, the mathematical relation is as follows,
  • Normality(N)=NumberofgramequivalentmassVolumeofsolutioninliter(V)

Explanation

  • Gram-equivalent weight of HCl is one mole of HCl is 1.008 + 35.453 = 36.461 g
  • 1N HCl means, 1g equivalent of HCl (Hydrochloric acid) dissolved in 1L solution.
  • So N/10HCl solution means, according to the definition of normality, 0.1g equivalent of HCl dissolved in 1L of solution.
