The Non-Aligned Movement was formed during the cold war era as an organisation of independent states that did not seek to formally align themselves with existing power blocs, i.e, the US and the USSR and sought to remain independent and neutral. The purpose was to ensure the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of non-aligned countries.
