Question

What is "nascent oxygen", and how does it relate to potassium permanganate?

Open in App
Solution

Nascent oxygen [O]:

  • Nascent oxygen is the atomic form of oxygen [O].
  • It has a high tendency to react with the other nascent oxygen [O] and to obtain an Oxygen O2molecule.
  • it does not exist as a molecule independently.
  • In chemical reactions, nascent oxygen [O]is produced from strong oxidizing agents like KMnO4.

Relation between Nascent oxygen and Potassium permanganate:

  • Nascent Oxygen [O] and Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) both are Oxidizing agents.
  • When Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) reacts with Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), it liberates nascent oxygen [O] i.e, an atom of oxygen, thus converting the ethanol (CH3CH2OH) to acetic acid (CH3COOH).
  • The chemical reaction can be depicted as:

C2H5OH(l)+2[O]Alc.KMnO4+CH3COOH(l)+H2O(l)
