Question

what is nef carbonyl synthesis? state its reagents and condition and mechanism

Open in App
Solution

Nef carbonyl synthesis

  • Nef reaction or synthesis involves acid hydrolysis of salt of primary or secondary nitroalkane to yield a carbonyl compound
  • sodium or potassium salt of primary (1°) and secondary (2°) nitroalkanes gives carbonyl compound on acidification with 50% concentrated solution of sulphuric acid.

Reagents

  • salt of primary or secondary nitroalkane such as nitroethane.
  • Concentrated sulphuric acid.
  • Sodium methoxide on silica gel - reaction medium

Reaction condition

  • At a temperature of 80oC or room temperature.

Reaction mechanism

  • Nitroalkanes are relatively strong carbon acids, and deprotonation leads to nitronate salt.
  • The hydrolysis of this intermediate must take place in strong acid,
  • To prevent the formation of side products such as oximes or hydroxynitroso compounds:
