Question

What is Newlands' law of octaves?

Open in App
Solution

Newlands' law of octaves:

Newlands in 1865 states that,” When chemical elements are organized by increasing atomic weight, after each interval of seven elements, those with similar physical and chemical properties occur”.

  • Newlands was one of the first to notice a periodic pattern in the properties of the elements.
  • When Elements are placed in increasing order of Atomic Mass, Newland's Law of Octaves asserts that the attributes of every eighth Element starting from any Element are a repetition of the properties of the initial Element. Only the law of octaves applied to elements up to calcium.
