Question

What is nitrogen-fixation ?

Open in App
Solution

Nitrogen fixation :
Bacteria living in the root nodules of leguminous plants like peas, beans absorb nitrogen directly from air and convert into nitrates. Thereafter, the plants convert it into proteins. Nitrogen is returned to the soil when plant and animal matter decays. This decomposition work is done by bacteria which reconvert dead organic tissue into its constituent nitrogen.
