Question

What is ocean thermal energy? How is it harnessed?

Open in App
Solution

Ocean thermal energy:

Ocean thermal energy can be utilised to generate electricity with the help of temperature variation between the deep ocean water and the ocean surface water. Some of the advantages of ocean thermal energy are as follows:

(1) No emission of greenhouse gases

(2) Low maintenance cost

(3) Independent of weather; and reliable source of energy

The way to harness ocean thermal energy:

Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is one of the processes which is useful in harnessing ocean thermal energy. This system uses the temperature difference in the ocean water to power the turbine for generating electricity. Evaporator and condenser are used to pump the warm surface seawater and the cold deep seawater.
