It is a number that is used to measure the antiknock properties of a liquid motor fuel (such as gasoline) with a higher number indicating a smaller likelihood of knocking.It is a measureof the quality of a petrol expressedas the percentageof isooctanein a mixtureof isooctane andn-heptane that gives a fuel with the same antiknockqualities as the givenpetrol. It is also called octane rating.
