What is octet rule.

Open in App
Solution

Octet rule: The octet rule states that each atom tends to have eight electrons in its valence shell through forming bonds with other atoms.

Example: Carbon dioxide

  • Carbon contains four electrons and oxygen contains six electrons in its valence shell.
  • So, a carbon atom combines with two oxygen atoms by sharing two electrons with each oxygen atom.
  • In this way the octet of both carbon and oxygen is completed.
