  1. It is also referred to as the estrous cycle.
  2. It commonly occurs in non-primate mammals.
  3. It starts at the onset of maturity and stops at pregnancies.
  4. It is a set of sexual processes in females or physiological changes due to reproductive hormones.
  5. It is commonly seen in cats, dogs, horses, cattle, etc.

Phases of oestrous cycle:

  1. Proestrus: One or more follicles of the ovary start to grow and estrogen helps to develop the endometrium.
  2. Estrus: In this phase, the females are sexually receptive and ready to mate.
  3. Metestrus: In this phase, the corpus luteum starts producing progesterone.
  4. Anestrus: In this phase, the sexual cycle is made to stop.
