Suppose light travels a distance 'd' in time interval 'T' then the distance traveled by light in a vacuum in the same time interval is known as optical path length.
In other words, the Optical path of a medium is defined as the distance d light travels in a vacuum at the same time it travels a distance d in the medium.
Optical path = refractive index × 'd'.
